Science and Research

The AMR Action Subcommittee published a commentary with the support of the Trainee Association of ESCMID (TAE) covering their activities during World AMR Awareness Week 2024. This annual event is a major time to reflect on and bring to light the ongoing challenges of antimicrobial resistance. This year the theme was "Educate. Advocate. Act now." and the subcommittee organised a webinar series in collaboration with the TAE and ISID to discuss topics like epidemiology, surveillance and policy. Yesterday was World Tuberculosis Day and in light of this we want to highlight two keynote lectures that will take place at the upcoming ESCMID Global 2025 addressing the world’s deadliest infectious disease.

Guy Thwaites will review the current situation regarding TB treatment and highlight where the gaps are describing the need for new clinical trials concerning drugs for the optimal treatment of TB as well as the potential for host-directed therapies.

Stewart Cole will discuss the current knowledge of mycobacteria infectious diseases and how genomics played an integral role in transforming the diagnosis, treatment and prevention practices.
