Emerging Infections comments on rise in MERS-CoV cases

Since the previous update on 5 May 2025, and as of 12 May 2025, nine new MERS - CoV cases - including two deaths - have been reported by health authorities in Saudi Arabia, bringing the total number of cases this year to ten.

The risk of sustained human-to-human transmission in Europe remains very low. However, the current MERS-CoV situation is concerning, as this rise in cases comes just two weeks ahead of the Mecca pilgrimage - a period typically associated with high international travel.

You can read more on the update from the Emerging Infections Subcommittee on the website and see the links to further reports.

With new technology improving the speed and accuracy of infection detection, clear and consistent diagnostic methods are more important than ever. However, interpreting test results can be challenging, as they depend on the patient’s condition and the potential harm of the microorganism.

Join our course to develop practical skills in diagnosing and treating bacterial infections using a standardised approach. This training will help clinical microbiologists make more accurate decisions and enhance patient care.
